STEVE MCQUEEN
Ok this month I am moving into the 70's;JUST for a minute, the very thought of polyester gives me hives, next month back to the classic guys, but I could not resist, I have always had a thing for guys who bucked the establishment so to speak and no one did it better than Steve "double hubba hubba" McQueen. My favorite movie? Bullit (did you have to ask?)
A man with his good looks and talent did not breeze through life without challenges;abandoned by his father and later by his mother for a season; he also had dyslexia and was partially deaf due to an ear infection in childhood. After a stint in the military (during which he saved the lives of 5 of his fellow soldiers) he pursued a career in acting. After a series of good breaks, including a role that put him in the company of Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr., Steve began to really get noticed for his acting talent and was soon acquiring meatier parts which included his breakout role in "The Great Escape" in 1963 and his Oscar nominated role in Bullitt a few years later.
He was an avid racer of both motorcycles and cars; a passion he had since childhood. In the early days of his acting career, he supported himself partly by competing in weekend motorcycle races and bought his first motorcycle with his winnings. He remembered for performing many of his own stunts, especially the majority of the stunt driving during the high-speed chase scene in Bullitt. McQueen also designed and patented a bucket seat and trans brake for race cars. So not only was he handsome as the day is long, he was talented, a military hero, and a brain (Hubba to the third degree! squeak!)
Sadly we lost him too soon, following complications from an operation, Steve passed away November 7, 1980; he was only 50 years old. It was rumored that he spent time with Minister Billy Graham before his passing about his faith which gives me hope he got his wings and makes me even more happy to celebrate him as my August Mr. Hubba Hubba of the month.
